THE BEGERKZ - SHIPWRECKED on Planet Earth

Troy Diamond Lund

Neek Neek began to take long, deep breaths, and within seconds he had completely covered himself with a powerful force field. In his mind, he began to think of all of the unhappy things he had experienced in his life. The bullies…the insults…his stepfather.

“Neek Neek!” Kaluka called out, “What are you doing?”

The boy was breathing even deeper now, building up his energy, making his shield even stronger. Kaluka and the other Begerkz began to shiver. Their beloved friend was cutting himself off from them, and a powerful rage was building up inside him.

Neek Neek closed his eyes and sent a request to Kaluka. “Summon every one of your tribe members, and have them surround me.”

Kaluka hesitated.

“Trust me,” Neek Neek reassured him.

Kaluka was the master of trust. He knew that without it, there was nothing, and so he nodded and closed his eyes, instructing every Begerk to join clawed hands and give Neek Neek their support. With dozens of the furry beings around him, the boy’s courage grew, and he bravely slammed his foot onto the ground.  Silence filled the air.

“You have taken me in,” Neek Neek announced, “You have become my closest friends. All of my life I knew that I was born to do something special. I always knew inside my heart that I was meant for greatness.”

Neek Neek’s eyes filled up with tears, and he let them pour down his face, unashamed. “You have helped me learn that humees can be great, majestic, and beautiful. You proved to me that I can do anything. Absolutely anything! So if you can create an entry way into the Astral World, I swear to you that I will retrieve your Navigation Stone, and your lost friends.”

There was a humming of voices throughout the crowd, Begerkz staring at one another in disbelief. The voices grew and grew until one voice rose up over them all.

It was Kaluka. “What makes you think the Elementals will not have you for lunch, Neek Neek?”

The boy was prepared for the question. In fact, he felt he had been preparing for this very moment for his entire life.

“Kaluka, I have a gift inside me that you do not possess. And that is the gift of my dark past. I will clear my mind of all things I love and all things I fear. It’s something no Begerk can do. But for a humee like me, it’s possible.”

Kaluka’s eyes widened with realization and he began to nod.  “Yes,” Kaluka stammered, “Of course, Neek Neek! They won’t be able to detect you if you aren’t emitting love or fear. You should be virtually invisible to them!”

Neek Neek’s chest swelled with pride. Perhaps Hal Ross had given him a gift, after all.
